Putting yourself first could be the kindest thing you can do for others!

At Kali Gillespie’s amazing Mobility Night last week I lay on my mat realizing how infrequently this happens in my life where I am simply still. It was luxurious to just lay there and let the peace and quiet surround me and wash away the constant internal dialogue that runs through my brain.

Do you find it hard to put yourself first?

Do you get up in the morning feeling like the world rushes at you and you don’t have time to collect your thoughts?

Just so you know you are not alone in our world of time and labour saving devices it seems our lives have never been fuller.

A full life is not necessarily a bad thing unless you feel like the tasks at hand are like an pending tidal wave poised to swallow you with stress and worry. This week I want to give you 3 steps that can help you push back against the daily onslaught of stuff to do and make your mental health top priority.

  1. Get out of bed and spend 10  minutes in quiet prayer or meditation before you do anything else. Don’t look at your phone before you do this as you will just think about all the things you need to do. After my prayer time I often find that solutions to the quandrys I went to bed with are revealed and I can face my day with confidence and optimism.
  2. Carve out time for fun. Do a CrossFit class, play a game of cards, take a walk in nature or initiate a game of catch with a friend.  I love to read and looking forward to 30 minutes with a good book is the treat I promise myself each day.
  3. Surround yourself with cheerleaders. Find people who believe in you and are excited about your accomplishments and will celebrate with you.

Putting yourself first can actually be the most selfless thing you can do. Fill up your cup each day and you will find that you have the strength to face the most daunting tasks. When you wake up tomorrow and the day rushes simply show it who’s boss and push back!

You can do this!
