The Importance of Self-Care

Self-care helps us maintain our own health and wellbeing. It also ensures we have enough fuel in our own tank to serve others. If we aren’t looking after ourselves, the external demands of life will eventually run us down to empty, making us of little use to not only ourselves but to those who could use our help and encouragement. This is a concept you may be familiar with if you’ve ever flown on an airplane (think back to when you actually could do this). The flight attendant always tells you to put on your own oxygen mask before helping the person next to you in the event of an emergency. It might seem selfish, but looking after yourself first often benefits others.

It can be really easy to get so caught up in doing things for others that we forget to look after ourselves. Do a self check-in today to see where you’re really at. It is easy to just push through each day not realizing how we’re actually doing. Ignorance may be bliss but if you have needs continually going unmet, I promise you it will not be sustainable forever. Fitness and nutrition is about longevity; we want to be healthy for the long haul.

Since COVID showed up, rearranging all of our lives, what has self-care looked like for you? Have you been intentional about having things in your life that bring you rest or rejuvenation? What are some things that bring joy and lift your spirit? We need these more than ever, especially in stressful times.

What is one thing you could commit to putting on your schedule this week to look after yourself? Make this a regular part of your self check-in.
