We are so proud of Beth and her courage to step out of her comfort zone and start CrossFit. Her story will both inspire and motivate you to be brave and to believe in yourself.
Beth’s story in her own words:
I have to smile at the reaction I get from people when I tell them I am doing Crossfit – I had the same feelings of surprise and even disbelief when I decided to start Crossfit at 66 years of age! I had followed Crossfit Lifetree on Facebook when we were living in Quebec and was impressed at how the workouts were modified for people and wondered if I could ever do that. After we moved here in 2020 and with amazing support and encouragement from my family, I started personal training sessions with Caileigh. After 2 months, I was ready to join a class but I was very nervous about what to do and how I would fit in. I needn’t have worried one bit as everyone was and continues to be so welcoming and supportive. I had done aquafit and yoga for many years, but what really interested me in the challenge of Crossfit was the mix of cardio, strength training and gymnastics that made up the workouts and the fact that every workout could be modified to work for my abilities and classes were always different, even though burpees seemed to come up pretty regularly!
Crossfit Lifetree has given me so much; a sense of accomplishment, confidence and pride after the challenging workouts; the chance to meet many wonderful and interesting people, some who have become real friends; the unexpected excitement of participating in my first Open a few months after joining classes, and then anxiously anticipating my second Open this year and being so impressed with myself for managing to tackle things I had never done before like attempting a wall walk; and the chance to finally get a handle on better nutrition after participating in last year’s Nutrition Kickstart program which was incredibly helpful for me.
It is so important as we age to maintain muscle mass, and I am seeing a positive change in my ability to do simple things like raising our heavy king size mattress to tuck under the sheets or lifting our 72 pound Bernese Mountain 6 month old puppy in and out of the car and, most importantly, keeping up with our 4 grandchildren.
I have to keep reminding myself to focus on how far I have come since I started and not how far I still have to go both in terms of my weight loss and tackling the workouts, but, with the guidance of the excellent Crossfit Lifetree coaches and the constant encouragement and support from the other gym members and my family, I think I am up for the challenge.
Mira started coming to CFLT as a cheerleader for her parents and those in the classes. She and her brother Malachi would be in the observation area doing burpees and squats with the class and giving high fives to everyone once the class was over.
Mira joined her first class as an athlete in January of 2021. Kid’s Coach Liz describes Mira as a natural leader, attentive, kind and intuitive. She knows when to step in and help without being told and is so encouraging to her fellow classmates.
Mira always gives 100% and has increased her strength, speed and power in all the CF movements she has learned. We are so proud of her and are excited to show her off to everyone this week in our Member Highlight feature.
Here is what Mira has to say about her classes at CrossFit LifeTree:
“I feel excited to come to my CrossFit class. My favourite thing to do is anything on the gymnastics bar. I also love all the fun games. I’ve also really liked making new friends at my classes.”
Anne joined in February 2019 and has been a bright shining light of positivity and love in our community from the day she walked through the door. Her humour and enthusiasm is contagious and any class with Anne is guaranteed to be full of laughter and fun. She has gained so much strength both in her body and her mind. We are so grateful and proud of Anne and all she has overcome. Here is what she has to say about how her life is better since she joined CrossFit LifeTree:
“As a recommendation by friends, CrossFit was the beginning of my fitness journey after I recovered from a car accident. I wanted to improve my strength and fitness levels and everything about training @ CFLT has exceeded my expectations.
The human body is truly “fearfully and wonderfully made”. Although the challenges presented often seemed impossible, there are always ways to overcome them. Now that is satisfying! Coaches are quick to adapt movements to your abilities and they challenge you to reach your potential. Because of the supportive environment, the coaching and the classes, everyone is encouraged to succeed. I continue to grow in my sport and learn that the possibilities are endless. I am hooked on CrossFit and am grateful for the community I belong to.”
Brooke came to us looking for a way to improve her fitness and ultimately her performance in the other sports she loves. She has been one of our hardest working athletes in our Teen CrossFit program and continues to get stronger and more confident in her abilities each week. Just recently she has increased to twice weekly training and we can’t wait to see the progress she will make as she doubles down on her efforts. Brooke has influenced many of her friends to join CrossFit and thus is helping them get fitter and gain a greater belief in themselves.
Here is what Brooke has to say about how her life has been made better since joining CrossFit LifeTree.
I’ve been doing crossfit for 18 months and it has helped me improve my fitness and my overall outlook on life. Crossfit is something I look forward to every week. I have learned it is good to challenge yourself and crossfit has helped me push myself and prove to myself that I can do it! My hard work has really paid off.
Hannah came into CrossFit 4 years ago with a background in dance. Her ability to pick up movements quickly, respond to cues and progress to the next level in so many areas has been so impressive. When she is in any class, the warmth and encouragement that she gives to the other athletes is an atmosphere changer. We are so grateful that Hannah has chosen CFLT as her training ground.
Here is what Hannah has to say about how CrossFit LifeTree has made her life better:
I joined CrossFit LifeTree in April 2018 and my life turned for the better. I attended my first few classes with my mom just for something to do together as mother and daughter. But after my first few classes, well let’s just say, nothing could have kept me away. I found a new appreciation for what my body could do.
I love the strength days at CrossFit LifeTree and the overall high-intensity functional movements. I fell in love with the sport and in October of last year I went and got my Level 1 to learn and gain more knowledge about CrossFit.
Crossfit has made a huge impact on my life. Found myself happier and feeling healthier after a class at CrossFit LifeTree. Doing physical activity really boosts my mood and it helps my mental health to stay a little bit more stable through life.
The Crossfit Lifetree space has truly become a family to me, pushing me to be the best version of myself. Not just in my fitness, but also my life. It has given me a foundation for a healthy lifestyle going forward into the rest of my adventures.
